Horizon League Championships: Day 3

CLEVELAND, Ohio, February 22. AFTER an unexpected water main break on the campus of Cleveland State University, the final two days of competition at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships were moved to the University of Akron's Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium. The meet went on however, with all events Friday and Saturday (12:00 p.m. diving, 4:00 p.m. swimming) being conducted as timed-finals, and it didn't appear to affect the swimmers, as multiple Horizon League records were broken and many of the events saw members of the same squad finishing in first and second place, on both the men's and women's side.

For the women, The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay continues to hold its lead after three days of competition. The Phoenix lead with a score of 535, followed by Wright State University (465) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (444). Rounding out the field are the University of Illinois at Chicago (244), Youngstown State University (179), Valparaiso University (153), Cleveland State University (113), and Butler University (81). On the men's side, the Raiders started to pull away from the pack, totaling 535 points, followed by Cleveland State (447), Milwaukee (444), UIC (390.5), Green Bay (346.5) and Valparaiso (138).

The evening began with a one-two finish for the Wright State women, and another record-breaking performance by Jessica Weidert. The Raider senior posted a winning time of 4:24.27 in the 400-yard individual medley, beating out teammate Krystyna Wieczerzak (4:28.04). In the next event, Green Bay's Ashley Warzon successfully defended her title in the 100-yard butterfly with her time of 56.27, beating out runner-up Ashley Williamson of Youngstown State (57.42). Another one-two sweep by the Raiders followed in the 200-yard freestyle, as winner Mabel Fernandez and runner-up Victoria Tafur both beat the previous League mark of 1:52.32, with Fernandez posting the new record time of 1:51.66, and Tafur finishing with 1:51.79. The next event, the 100-yard breaststroke, continued the trend with a one-two sweep, this time by Milwaukee's Kerry Rossow (1:04.10) and Shannon Berndt (1:04.14). It was then Green Bay's turn, as Danielle DeGrand and teammate Mary Stravinski achieved the feat in the 100-yard backstroke, with DeGrand just missing the League record of 57.03 with her mark of 57.10. The evening ended with yet another record-breaking victory by Wright State, this time in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as its team of Krystyna Wieczerzak, Kelsey Cooper, Victoria Tafur, and Mabel Fernandez shattered the League record with a time of 7:30.32.
