BLACKSBURG, VA, February 11. THE Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team faced off against the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Pool, winning 118-104, to finish the regular season 6-5.
The Hokies were paced by double winners Doug Roper, Tom Alberi and Casey Moore. The latter two, along with Kevin Furlong and Gus Calado, set a new pool record in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.69.
Kevin Furlong also broke a pool record in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 55.75. Moore, Alberi, Scott Beard and Aaron Sherman set the pool record in the 200 free relay with a time 1:22.86.
Roper swept the diving events with. In the one-meter event, he scored 247.87. In the three-meter, he recorded a 289.12 mark.
Moore won the 50 free, followed closely by Furlong and Sherman. Alberi was victorious in the 100 butterfly. Placing second and third in that event were Pete Cancila, and Tommy Evans.
Neil Savage and Kyle Russell placed first and second in the 1,000 freestyle. Savage had a time of 9:43.41.
Austin Fiehler swam a personal best 4:06.70 to win the 400 IM, Savage and Stephen Jenson finished closely behind.
Zac Czaplicki won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.33. Jake Bova and Phil Smith touched afterwards for second and third places finishes, respectively.
Diver Scott Hudson finished second in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
The Hokies swam the last five events as exhibitions.
Tech's next action comes at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, in Atlanta, Ga. The meet will be held February 23-26.
