Hillsdale, Lewis vs. Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Michigan, October 26. THE Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2008-09 campaigns with victories at the GVSU Pool Saturday (Oct. 25). The Laker women defeated Hillsdale (134-92) and Lewis (146-58) in a double dual, while the men claimed a 146-91 win over Lewis.

The 400 medley relay team (Danielle Buglio, Toni Musto, Jenna Thayer and Kaitlin Myszkowsi) claimed first with a time of 4:04. Erin Kinney finished first in the 1000 freestyle (10:58), while Allison Scholz (25.25) and Kim Baughman (25.26) finished second and third in the 50 freestyle. Jenna Thayer (2:11.27) claimed top honors in the 200 IM, while Karen Verbrugge (236.40) led a GVSU 1-2 finish on the 1-meter board. The Lakers dominated the 100 freestyle with a 1-2-3-4 finish. Kaitlin Myszkowski was first (55.35), followed by Allison Scholz (55.56), Sam Stump (55.91) and Melissa Faletti (56.18). Jordan Appleyard claimed won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:12.01, followed by a second-place finish by Danielle Buglio (2:14.69). Erin Kinney touched first in the 500 freestyle (5:17.95).

The Laker men started strong with a victory in the 400 medley relay as Evan Kobes, Hans Hill, Aaron Beebe and Jordan Schrotenboer touched in 3:35.30. Jeremy Sall (22.00) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 freestyle, while Matt Witkowski won the 200 IM (1:56.76) and the 100 freestyle (46.47). Evan Betts notched a score of 291.35 on the 3-meter board.
