High School: Xavier Takes Fifth Straight Arizona 5A State Title

TEMPE, Arizona, November 8. XAVIER Prep cruised to its fifth straight 5A girls state championship at Arizona State's Mona Plummer Aquatic Center yesterday. It was the Gators' 17th state championship in the past 20 years.

Xavier scored 430.50 points, almost 200 more than Mesa Mountain View in second (238) while Tucson Salpointe Catholic was third (166).

No state records were set, but Marana Mountain View senior Lacey Nymeyer came close. After swimming 23.24 in the 50 free in Friday's prelims, she won today in 23.25, just off Cait Connealy's record mark of 23.03. Nymeyer's best is 23.06.

Nymeyer also won the 100 freestyle in 51.05, well off Emily Mastin's state mark of 49.72.

The only double winner, Nymeyer was chosen the 5A female Swimmer of the Year by meet officials.

Xavier had champions in sophomore Tiffany Elias (500 free), junior Lisa Marchi (100 back) and junior Cydney Siggins (200 IM).

Siggins swam the second-fastest 100 freestyle (52.74) today, but it was only good for ninth place as she swam it in consols after failing to make the A final. She made up for that miscalculation,m however, by breezing to victory in the 200 IM in 2:06.55.

Xavier won all three relays – the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

Mesa Mountain View coach Glen Coy was named 5A girls Coach of the Year.
