High School State Championships: West Virginia Boys and Girls

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, February 22. MORGANTOWN High School defeated George Washington for the girls team title at the West Virginia State High School Championships Feb. 16-18 at the University of West Virginia. Morgantown collected 170 points to 164 for George Washington. Buckhannon-Upshur took third with 141.5 points, followed by Elkins' 121.5 and Notre Dame's 93.

The Elkins quartet of freshman Samantha Hall, senior Christa Varner, sophomore Kayla Gainer and junior Delaney Johnson combined for a 1:41.05 in the 200 free relay and 3:43.38 in the 400 free relay to set new state records in those events. Hall tied with Maggie Miller, a freshman at Buckhannon-Upshur in the 50 free (24.89). Miller gained a victory in the 100 free with her 54.09.

Nitro senior Megan Clemens picked up victories in the 200 free (1:56.59) and 500 free (5:06.78). Kelsey Ferguson, a senior at Weir, collected wins in both the 200 IM (2:10.91) and 100 breast (1:07.72). Buckhannon-Upshur senior Courtney Miller was tops in the 100 back (56.93) and Notre Dame freshman Cassie Oltman triumphed in the 100 fly (1:00.19).

Buckhannon-Upshur's team of Miller, senior Michaela Mills with freshmen Patricia Loughney and Maggie Miller captured the 200 medley relay win with their 1:54.19.

South Charleston junior Austin Green set the only state record in the boys competition with his 48.29 in the 100 breast. That erased the 59.16 set by Thomas Moore last year. Green also triumphed in the 100 free in 46.38.

Nate Carr, a junior at Charleston Catholic, posted winning times of 53.31 in the 100 back and 1:53.51 in the 200 IM. Capital senior Tate Warden also collected two wins with his 1:41.49 in the 200 free and 4:37.29 in the 500 free.

Bridgeport junior Frank Csonka powered his way to a 21.83 first-place time in the 50 free, and Hurricane junior Jack Wright's 100 fly time 52.94 was good for the win in that event.

Three different schools picked up one relay win each. Hurricane's team of Wright, sophomore Zach Shurow, senior Alex Howden and freshman Luke Earls combined for a 1:44.19 in the 200 medley relay. Victory in the 200 free relay went to Capital in 1:32.79 with the quartet of senior Scott Adams, junior Corrie Sahffer, sophomore Logan Garrison and Warden. Charleston Catholic's squad of seniors Jacob Crain and Isaac McKown, junior Samuel Kessler and Carr put together a 3:23.73 for the 400 free relay win.
