High School State Championships: Utah 3A Boys, Girls

PROVO, Utah, February 11. WASATCH High School was the top team after the Utah 3A Championships concluded Feb. 8-9 in Provo. On the girls side, Wasatch scored 317 points. Judge Memorial finished second (263.5), followed by Park City (258), Desert Hills (246) and Snow Canyon (129). The Wasps scored 379 points to dominate the boys competition. Park City (244) was second, with Desert Hills taking third over Stansbury (184-175) and Juan Diego fifth (148).

The Lady Wasps were led by sophomore Phebe James, champion in the 50 yard free (25.49); and 100 breast victor, junior Anna Dahl (1:06.54). James and Dahl were joined by senior Rachel Low and Megan Mounteer for a 200 free relay triumph (1:41.39).

The Judge Memorial quartet of sophomores Allison Witte and Marcela Vasquez, junior Kaley Banyai and junior Emileeann Moran finished 11-hundredth ahead of Wasatch's squad of sophomore Maddy Svoboda, Dahl, sophomore Rachel Finley and Low to take the 200 medley relay (1:54.34 to 1:54.45).

Amelia Draney, a junior at Desert Hills, defended her distance free titles with her 1:52.37 in the 200 and 4:59.38 in the 500 free. Her 200 time was just 12-hundredths slower than the Division 3 record she posted last year. Draney anchored Desert Hills' victorious 400 free relay with juniors Tessa Trimble and Madison Wawrzyniak plus sophomore Zoe Smith. Trimble's 1:00.67 in the 100 fly gave her the winning 20 points in that event.

Snow Canyon senior McKenzie Barber grabbed titles in both the 200 IM (2:16.00) and 100 free (54.06). Park City junior Natalie McDonald stood on top of the podium courtesy of her 1:00.21 in the 100 back.

The Wasatch Wasps swept all three of the boys relay events. The 200 medley relay of seniors David Finley, Brady Winward and Sam England, with junior Hunter Hallows swimming the second leg, cruised to a 1:39.19. England and Winward were joined by seniors Bryce Mounteer and Hunter Tolbert for the winning 200 free relay (1:29.97). Finley, Mounteer, Tolbert and Hallows closed out the meet with their 3:20.00 first-place finish in the 400 free relay.

Wasatch also gained 20 points from two individual event winners. Finley posted a 54.92 in the 100 back, and Mounteer's 49.57 was good for first in the 100 free.

Park City senior Zach Carfi swam his way to victory in both the 100 breast (1:00.74) and 200 IM (2:01.30). Pine View junior Mitchell Hutchings also earned victory in the 200 free (1:45.84) and 500 free (4:51.43).

In the 50 free, Cedar City senior Mitchell Brown finished ahead of Wasatch's Mounteer, 22.50-22.54. Tooele senior Brandon Johnson also completed his high school swimming career with a 53.80 victory in the 100 fly.
