High School State Championships: Indiana Girls

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, Feb. 10. IT wasn't even close.

For the 27th straight season, the Carmel Greyhounds claimed the team title with 397 points at the Indiana State High School Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 8-9 in Indianapolis. Penn outpointed Zionsville for second, 189-178. Hamilton Southeastern took Chesterton out of fourth by just two points, 127-125. Crown Point missed out on fifth by five points (120).

Carmel's 200 medley relay of senior Lacey Locke, sophomore Alex Clarke, senior Ariana Bullard and freshman Veronica Burchill bettered Carmel's 2011 state mark of 1:41.42 with their 1:41.17. And the team of Burchill, junior Hanna House, freshman Claire Adams and Locke lowered Carmel's state record 3:24.22 from 2009 by almost a second (3:23.37). House, Adams, Burchill and Bullard claimed victory in the 200 free relay, combining for a 1:32.97.

Individually, Carmel's Adams erased Jenny Connolly's 2008 state record in the 100 free (53.53) with her clocking of 53.40. She also claimed the 200 free in 1:49.25. Bullard also was tops in the 100 fly, posting a 53.90.

Penn junior Bethany Galat was another double-event winner, taking both the 200 IM (1:59.06) and the 100 breast (1:00.29).

Brittney Walter, a Northridge senior, captured the 500 free (4:53.49), and Zionsville junior Alex Cleveland went just under 23 seconds for her 50 free win (22.99).

Sarah Bacon, a sophomore at Cardinal Ritter, claimed the diving title with her score of 506.95 points.
