High School State Championships: Indiana Boys

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 26. THE Chesterton Trojans set four state records on their way to their team title at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis Feb. 23-24. Chesterton scored 238.5 points to runner-up North Central Indianapolis' 203.50. Carmel grabbed third (173), just ahead of Penn's 169. Taking fifth was Hamilton Southeastern (144).

Chesterton senior Aaron Whitaker set the first record of the meet with his 47.33 in the 100 back. That erased Kyle Whitaker's 2009 mark of 47.85. Whitaker's 47.29 in the 100 free erased Andrew Elliot's 2008 time of 48.99. Blake Pieroni, a junior, added a state mark in the next event, the 100 free. His 44.28 lowered Ryan Wochomurka's 2001 record of 44.36. He also posted a winning 1:48.86 in the 200 IM.

St. Joseph senior came within 8-hundredths of a state record in the 200 free (1:37.20). Northridge senior Austin Flagler cruised to a 20.37 in the 50 free. La Porte senior Joshua Arndt scored a total of 484.00 in the diving competition to earn first. Bloomington North senior Max Irwin earned first in the 500 free with his 4:23.60.

Columbus North junior Cody Taylor claimed first in the 100 breast (55.25).
The all-junior Chesterton 200 medley relay of Andy Hurst, Jack Wallen, Whitaker and Pieroni began the meet with a 1:32.45 in the 200 medley relay. Pieroni, Whitaker, Patrick Curley and Whitaker–again, all juniors, ended the competition with their victorious 3:04.77. North Central Indianapolis spoiled a Chesterton sweep with their 1:24.26 in the 200 free relay with the team of seniors Samuel Lorentz, Theodore Steinkamp and Joseph Steinkamp, plus junior Joseph Krahulik.
