High School State Championships: Illinois Boys

WINNETKA, Illinois, February 25. ONE national and three state records were rewritten during the Illinois State High School Boys Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 23-24 in New Trier.

Mundelein senior Connor Black flew to a national public record in the 100 fly with his 46.71. It erased Sean Fletcher’s 2009 mark of 47.08. The national prep record, by Bolles’ Joseph Schooling from last year of 46.50, still stands. Black also cleared out Mike Dominski’s state record of 48.19 from 2009.

Kevin Overholt’s 2009 time of 1:37.24 in the 200 free was taken down by New Trier senior Reed Malone with his 1:36.82. Malone also captured the 500 free with his 4:23.27. The 50 free also was claimed by Black (19.95). Andrew Jovanovic, a Loyola Academy senior, bettered the 100 back mark with his 48.25. That bettered Matt Grevers’ 2003 prelim swim of 48.77.

New Trier senior Jae Park earned a 1-hundreth triumph in the 200 IM (1:50.04), edging out Addison Trail senior Nick Zito (1:50.05). Sacred Heart-Griffin junior Ryan Held’s 44.43 earned him first In the 100 free, and the top diver was Normal University senior Brandis Heffner (447.25).

New Trier’s 200 medley relay of Park, with seniors Jack Mangan, Brian Walsh and David Schriesheim combined for a 1:32.35. Malone came on board with Mangan Walsh and Park for a second victory in the 400 free relay (3:02.75). Hinsdale Central’s squad of senior Connor Schroyer, sophomores Brian Powell and Brian Portand, and senior Will Leach turned in a winning 1:23.43 in the 200 free relay.
