High School State Championships: Florida 3A

STUART, Florida, November 18. TWO powerhouse schools moved from Division 2 to Division 3 and picked up right where they left off at this year’s Florida High School Swimming Association Swimming and Diving Championships Nov. 15 at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatics Athletic Center in Stuart.

Girls
Chiles High School’s girls team, winners of the last three titles in Division 2 competition, collected 250 points to take the Division 3 title this year, followed by Gulf Coast’s 220. Niceville finished in third (144), followed by Osceola (132) and St. Petersburg Northeast (121).

The Timberwolves had excellent leadership from seniors Delaney Barnard and CeCe Williams. Williams, who signed with the University of Virginia, claimed her second straight 200 free victory with her 1:47.31, and emerged from the runner-up position she held for the past two years with this year’s winning 4:48.48 in the 500 free. Barnard, who today signed with Indiana, placed first in the 100 free in 51.02 after her third-place showing last year.

The co-captains combined with sisters Makayla (junior) and Morgan Ayers (freshman) to win the 200 free relay in 1:37.71. Junior Ali Lombardi joined williams, Morgan Ayers and Barnard for a triumphant 3:30.77 in the 400 free relay.

The Gulf Coast Sharks squad of juniors Elise Haan, Niki Fistrovic and Nora Gillen, along with freshman Kayla Tennant, posted a first-place 1:46.26 in the 200 medley relay. Haan became a three-time champion in the 100 back with this year’s 54.01 and finished a close second to Mitchell junior Taylor Anderson in the 50 free (23.39 to 23.55). Tennant pulled out a victory in the 100 fly, 55.39 to 55.47, ahead of Lakewood Ranch sophomore Madison Jean.

Creekside senior Meghan Haila defended her 100 breast title with a 1:02.73. Hannah Burns, a junior at Columbia, finished first in the 200 IM (2:00.95). Caylie Hirapara, an Atlantic Coast junior, won the diving event with 428.85 points.

Boys
The Belen Jesuit Prep Wolverines, winners of six of the previous seven Division 2 championships, continued their streak with their 249-240 point victory over Gainesville. Venice finished in third (165), just ahead of Lakewood Ranch (159). Sebastian River took fifth with 124 points.

The Wolverines quartet of junior Ryan Guso, senior Juan Perez Costa, freshman Alejandro Carriazo and senior Boleck de Pawlikowski barely grabbed the 400 yard free relay title with their 3:09.55. Right behind them was Venice’s relay of senior John Pelton, sophomore Matt Pelton, junior David Lattimer and senior Peyton Leeson at 3:09.57. The Pelton brothers, along with senior Santiago Ruvira and Leeson, took the 200 free relay in 1:27.35.

Belen Jesuit also started off the meet with a winning performance, as senior Manuel Lopez and junior Ryan Guso joined De Pawlikowski and Carriazo for a 1:34.95 in the 200 medley relay. De Pawlikowski nabbed the only 20-point individual performance for the team with his 50.13 in the 100 back.

Three seniors finished off their high school competition with two individual victories each. Fort Myers’ Logan Samuelson, who is headed for Auburn this fall, defended his 500 free victory (4:22.77) and improved on his fourth-place finish last year with his winning 1:38.58 in the 200 free. Danny Hartley from Jensen Beach posted times of 20.73 in the 50 free and 49.57 in the 100 fly. Sebastian River’s Andrew Wojcic grabbed the 200 IM title (1:53.17) and the 100 breast (56.77) wins.

Pace senior Nathaniel Thomas, who finished second to Hartley in the 50 free (20.95) easily won the 100 free in 45.91. James Voisard from Winter Haven was the top diver with 493.10 points.
