High School State Championships: California CIF Southern Section Division 1

RIVERSIDE, California, May 14. JUNIPERO Serra High School's girls squad defeated University (Irvine), 275-274, to claim the girls title at the CIF Southern Section 1A Championships May 11-12. Santa Margarita came in third with 253 points; rounding out the top five teams were Edison (214) and Woodbridge (199.5).

Junipero Serra's 200 free relay of freshmen Kaitlyn Albertoli, Karli Thuen, Katie McLaughlin and junior Rebecca Millard set a Division 1 record 1:34.50; freshman Brittany Kahn joined Albertoli, Millard and McLaughlin for a 3:25.44 in the 400 free relay. The previous 200 free relay standard was 1:34.75, set by Fountain Valley's 2010 team. Woodbridge grabbed the 200 medley relay win with the quartet of sophomore Alexa Clayfield, senior Genevieve Bradford, freshman Daniela Georges and senior Daya Choi (1:45.76).

Junipero Serra's McLaughlin claimed the 100 fly in 53.70, just off the Division 1 meet record of 53.70 by Tara Thomas in 2007. Georges posted a 1:47.11 in the 200 free to give Woodbridge its only individual event title.

University senior Megan Rankin was first in the 200 IM (2:01.10), and juniors Maggie Burton (100 breast, 1:02.78) and Cheyenne Low (100 back, 55.87) also earned wins.

Saugus freshman Abbey Weitzeil was the only double individual champion, taking the 50 free in 23.07 and the 100 free in 49.63. La Canada senior Katy Campbell finished first in the 500 free (4:42.83).

Capistrano Valley's boys team earned 389 points for their team victory. Corona del Mar was second (302), with Loyola third (289.5), Edison (245) and University (186).

Kyle Gormay, a sophomore at Redlands, bettered Tom Shields' Division 1 mark of 47.55 in the 100 fly from 2009 with his 47.29. Gornay doubled with his 48.17 win in the 100 back. Corona del Mar's 200 medley relay of senior Jared Namba, freshman Tyler Lin plus juniors Christian Garkani and Blake Motal, combined for a Division 1 record 1:32.88. San Marino's 1991 team held the previous record of 1:33.21.

Capistrano Valley took home wins in both freestyle relay races. Juniors Jon Beck, Spencer DeShon and Jack Descombes, with senior Tyler Testman swimming second, posted a 1:23.17, not far off Yucaipa's 2008 mark of 1:23.04. Senior Logan Redondo combined with Beck, DeShon and Descombes for a 3:03.47 victory in the 400 free relay. Redondo brought home the only individual win for Capistrano Valley with his 1:38.52 in the 200 free.

Loyola senior Fred Abramyan grabbed the sprint free titles with his efforts of 20.44 in the 50 free and 44.43 in the 100 free, Other event victories went to Aliso Niguel junior Janardan Burns (500 free, 4:23.55), Westlake senior Hunter Cobleigh (100 breast, 56.39) and Namba (200 IM, 1:50.01).
