High School Dual Meet Win Streaks – Revisited

By Jason Marsteller

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 11. A few days ago, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com asked its readers, "What is the National Record?" regarding high school dual meet win streaks. While no responses came in about a record for the boys, many reported that the national record for the girls is 234 set by Elkhart Central in Indiana from 1980-94.

While at first glance, this piece of information disputes the article recently written in the Arizona Republic that Scottsdale Desert Mountain had broken the "high school girls swimming dual meet national record streak" of Phoenix Xavier Prep with a 97-89 triumph that stopped Xavier's streak at 217.

However, as Bob Klapthor of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) explained in our first article asking the question, both Elkhart Central and Xavier could possibly each hold a record. The difficulty is that some dual meet streaks include first-place invitational wins in the streak, while others only include dual meets. There is no actual independent record-keeping organization that recognizes these records.

Although, having a "national record" to shoot for does provide some motivational fodder for coaches, as evidenced by Cheshire High's current string of 233 victories for the girls swim team, as reported here by the Courant.

We'd still be interested in hearing from our readers if they know of any other streaks in girls swimming. Please use the Reaction Time feature below to help us as we continue to look into this record-keeping issue.
