Heat sheets for the first morning of action from the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships have been posted with a relatively quiet morning with only four events on the schedule.

2017 Phillips 66 U.S. Nationals, Day 1 Prelims Heat Sheets – Results

The 200 butterfly will start the morning off with Hali Flickinger and Tom Shields leading the prelim psych sheets. Flickinger leads the women’s 200 fly ranks without the presence of longtime veteran Cammile Adams. Flickinger leads Cassidy Bayer and Hannah Saiz on the psych sheet.

Shields leads a close crop of 1:55’s and 1:56’s after the retirement of Michael Phelps. Shields swam the event in Rio last summer but failed to reach the semi-finals; the only US swimmer to do so in Rio. Shields leads Chase Kalisz by 0.01 seconds and Pace Clark and Jack Conger are also within striking distance of the lead.

Simone Manuel leads the 100 free seeds as she enters as the defending Olympic gold medalist. Manuel leads Abbey Weitzeil, Amanda Weir and Lia Neal on the psych sheet, all of whom are Olympians. Mallory Comerford and Katie Ledecky are also within striking distance of getting on the relay for World Championships.

Nathan Adrian is the top seed in the 100 free prelims ahead of young guns Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Held, Michael Chadwick and Blake Pieroni. Outside of Conor Dwyer, Adrian (28) is six years older than the next oldest swimmer in the top eight (Chadwick and Held). It will certainly be youth vs. experience in the 100 free tomorrow as the US will look to put up a formidable performance before the World Championships.

The women’s 800 and men’s 1500 will be Tuesday morning and the fastest seeded heat will swim at night. Katie Ledecky and Leah Smith are the top seeds in the 800 and True Sweetser and Robert Finke are the top seeds in the 1500. Ledecky and Smith are expected to make the World’s team and the men’s race is up for grabs after the retirement of veterans Connor Jaeger and Michael McBroom, and Jordan Wilimovsky sitting out the meet.
