Head Coach Shane Tusup Explains Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu’s Lack of Top-End Performance at Euros

HERNING, Denmark, December 16. ALTHOUGH someone who wins four medals and is still named the Female Swimmer of the Meet at the European Short Course Championships really can’t be said to have done poorly, European Swimmer of the Year Katinka Hosszu didn’t quite dominate in Herning like the swimming community expected.

In fact, Hosszu had a few head-to-head losses with Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia in events Hosszu typically would run away with. With plenty of reaction regarding Hosszu’s performances, Swimming World spoke with Hosszu’s husband and coach Shane Tusup to ask whether Hosszu had an illness that prevented her from performing at a world-beater level.

Tusup was candid in his response, shouldering the blame based on his belief that he didn’t rest her properly.

“I would need to shoulder the blame for her being slightly off her game,” Tusup told Swimming World. “In the interest of continuing to advance our program, we played with the rest period a little adding in a slightly different variable. I think it was a positive change, however, we need to slightly adjust it because I think it caused her to be a few days short on rest. Most of the evidence and feedback from her points to her being slightly under-rested for Euros. I should have a much better view of the situation after the Salnikov Cup next week and the La Reunion meet following that.”
