Hawkins Named Assistant Coach at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 12. OHIO State head men's swim coach, Bill Wadley, has named Steve Hawkins as Assistant Coach. Hawkins comes to Ohio State for a second time. He previously was part of the Buckeye coaching staff from 1998-2000, when he served as a volunteer coach.

Hawkins spent the past two seasons serving as head coach of the men's and women's swimming programs at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. He led the women's team to 11th- and 14th-place finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and coached his swimmers to Division II All-America status in four events.

While at Ohio State, he also served as Director of Aquatics and Competitive Swimming for Swimming, Inc., an aquatics facility in Worthington, Ohio, from 1998-2000. There, he developed and managed several swimming programs, including a USA Swimming club team, and monitored many aspects of the facility including maintenance and budget management.

After a brief stint as an assistant coach at Lancaster (Ohio) High School, Hawkins began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Ohio University. Hawkins served on the coaching staff for the men's and women's teams for two seasons, also assisting in strength and conditioning for the diving program.

Hawkins spent eight years as a member of the United States Navy (1986-94) and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, where he served as a Builder Second Class in the U.S. Naval Reserve Seabees.

He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Long Beach State in 1996 and received a master's in physical education from Ohio University in 1998.
