Hagiwara Blasts Japanese Record, Swims World’s Fastest 200 Backstroke of ’02

TOKYO, June 13. TOMOKO Hagiwara set a national record today at the Japanese National Championships and Trials for the Pan Pacs and Asian Games, being held at the Tatsami International Pool in Tokyo.

Hagiwara's 2:10.05 for the 200m backstroke is also the world's fastest time this year. Hagiwara was the class of a very fast field that saw Reiko Nakamura second in 2:11.24, as both Toshie Abe and Aya Terakawa swam 2:12s.

Takashi Yamamoto won, as expected, in the men's 100 meter fly, but he was pushed by Kohei Kawamoto. Yamamoto clocked 52.77 was Kawamoto swam a strong
53.25 for the silver.

Other fine swims were turned in by Sachiko Yamada in the women's 400m free (4:a11.84), Takashi Nakano in the men's 200m back (1:59.74); Kosuke Kitajima in the men's 50m breast (28.14); and Maki Mita and Yuko Nakanishi in the women's 100m fly (59.71 and 59.84).
