Hackett Bails Out of NSW Championships

SYDNEY, Australia, February 12. GRANT Hackett has withdrawn from this week's NSW Championships in Sydney, a meet he originally planned to use as a tuneup for next month's World Championships in Melbourne. Hackett, the world-record holder in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles, was scheduled to contest the 200 and 400 free events.

Last week, Hackett announced that he was leaving his longtime coach Denis Cotterell and had decided on Ian Pope as his new coach. International Quarterback, the company that represents Hackett, put out a release that said Hackett's withdraw was connected to his decision to shift his training base to Melbourne under Pope.
