MELBOURNE, Australia, March 23. GROUP play in women's water polo came to a conclusion at the FINA World Championships held in Melbourne, Australia.
Germany notched an 11-4 victory over China in Group A competition. Katrin Dierolf accounted for much of the scoring with five goals for Germany, while teammate Monika Kruszona also posted a hat trick with three goals. Sun Yating led China with two goals.
Russia grabbed a 12-7 win over Spain in the other Group A match. Sofya Konukh and Ekaterina Pantyulina paced the Russians with three goals each, while Miriam Lopez-Escribano and Laura Lopez tallied two goals each for Spain.
Canada picked up a 13-4 triumph over Puerto Rico in Group B action. Dominique Perrault led Canada with a hat trick, while Amanda Ortiz, Angelica Garcia, Anaid Ralat and Francheska Salib each registered a goal for Puerto Rico.
In the other Group B match, Australia downed Brazil, 11-3. No box score has been reported by FINA.
The United States secured a spot in the quarterfinals with an undefeated run in group play when it upended Greece, 8-6. Ericka Lorenz led a balanced attack with two goals for the U.S., while Antigoni Roumpesi notched four of Greece's goals.
In the other Group C match, the Netherlands doubled up Kazakhstan, 14-7. Danielle De Bruijn led all scorers with four for the Netherlands, while Marina Gritsenko connected three times for Kazakhstan.
Hungary crushed Cuba, 19-4, in Group D play. Agnes Valkai tickled the twine with five goals, while Mercedes Steiber (4) and Agnes Primasz (3) each recorded hat tricks for Hungary. Hirovis Hernandez provided the bulk of scoring for Cuba with three goals.
In the second straight Group D blowout, Italy drilled New Zealand, 21-9. Erzsebet Valkai connected for six goals, while Silvia Bosurgi (5), Tania Di Mario (3) and Maddelena Musumeci (3) all notched hat tricks for Italy. Kelly Mason registered five goals for New Zealand, while Anna Sieprath also came through with a hat trick with three goals.
