Great Britain, Japan Grab Gold at FINA World Junior Diving Championships

TUCSON, Arizona, September 6. 2008 U.S. Olympian Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.) won the silver medal in the girls group A platform event Sunday at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships. It was the eighth medal won by Team USA during the championships.

Dunnichay finished with 418.55 points, second only to Japan's Fuka Tatsumi, who scored 445.05 points for the gold. China's Cao Jingzhen edged USA's Annika Lenz (Altadena, Calif.) by less than a point for bronze, 414.90-414.10.

Dunnichay, who hadn't competed on the junior circuit since 2006, was competing in her first World Junior Diving Championships after representing the United States in synchronized diving at the 2008 Olympic Games and 2009 World Championships.

"I didn't really have any expectations. I'm so used to doing synchro and not individual. I just wanted to have fun, and I loved it. It was a totally different atmosphere than a senior meet," Dunnichay said.

USA also had two divers advance to the boys group B 3-meter finals. Dashiell Enos (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fifth with 436.50 points, and Bryce Klein (Southlake, Texas) was seventh at 423.25. Great Britain's Jack Laugher won his second gold of the championships with 483.60, and Mexico's Andres Villarreal scored 469.20 points for the silver.

The FINA World Junior Diving Championships wrap up Monday with girls group B 3-meter and boys group A platform competition.
