Walnut Creek’s Sylvia Bereknyei and Foxcatcher’s Jessie Carr have been added to the Goodwill Games roster to replace 1996 Olympians Amy Van Dyken and Kristine Quance-Julian, who have each withdrawn from the team. Van Dyken recently underwent surgery to repair a tear in the cartilage that holds her shoulder joint in place. She will also miss the U.S. Swimming National Championships in August. Quance-Julian is expecting a baby early next year and has also withdrawn from the summer meets.
Bereknyei, 17, is a versatile swimmer who will likely swim the 400m freestyle relay, and possibly several individual events. Carr, 17, will likely swim the 200m individual medley.
The 1998 Goodwill Games will be held July 28 to Aug. 2 in East Meadow, N.Y.
