Golden Grizzley Quadrangular

ROCHESTER, Michigan, October 26. THE University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team found success at the Golden Grizzley Quadrangular, Saturday in Rochester, Mich., the Bearcats first meet of the 2008-09 campaign.

The women defeated Wayne State 200-100, but fell to Oakland (176-124), and Western Kentucky (218-82).

The men's team narrowly missed knocking off Wayne State (155-141) and also lost to Oakland (189-110) and Western Kentucky (199-100).

The Bearcats took first, third, and fifth in the women's 400-yard freestyle.

Liz Hansson, Amy Billow, Elinore de Jong, and Lange Gilby touched in first with a 3:33.36 clocking followed by Bree Rossi, Anna Bersana, Laurie Caudy and Karli Kentner in third (3:43.44). The quartet of Melody Smith, Tammy Smith, Emma Misanik and Natalie Plunkett took fifth in 3:51.66.

Jeremy Peter and Josh Schneider each won individual events for the men's team.

Peter won the 200-yard backstroke event, besting the field with a 2:07.36 clocking and also won the 200 IM in 1:53.19. Peter was also third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.61.

Schneider won the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.40. He was also second in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 45.98. He also placed second in the 100 butterfly (50.74).

The women's 200-yard medley relay squad of Kentner, Stephanie Conklin, de Jong, and Hansson placed fourth with a time of 1:48.10.

de Jong also was third in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.37, and third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.72).

Hansson had a pair of third-place finishes individually, in the 100 backstroke (58.84), and 100 freestyle (53.49), while Gilby took fifth in the 100 free with a time of 54.13.

Kentner had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly with times of 1:07.16 and 58.79, respectively.

The men's 200-medley relay squad of Nick Saul, Peter, Schneider, and Issac Hays clocked in fourth with a time of 1:35.56

Nathan Williams and Stephen Cunningham took third and fourth in the both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle with clockings of 4:41.79 and 4:42.49 in the 500, and times of 9:37.06 and 9:39.10 in the 1,000, respectively.

Nate Kramer placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.21.

Jakub Carda was fifth in the 200 IM in 1:56.47.

Lindsay Bakan was fifth in both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, tallying 214.85 and 190.85 points, respectively.

Shannon McCarthy was fifth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.37.

Erin Mullins, Conklin, and Emma Misanik were fifth, sixth, and seventh in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:27.52, 2:28.04, and 2:28.46, respectively.

Melody Smith was third in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:13.29.

UC is back in the pool on Nov. 7, heading to Columbus to take on Ohio State in a dual meet. The meet is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The Bearcats will open up the home portion of the schedule on Sat., Nov. 8, taking on BIG EAST rival West Virginia at noon at the Keating Aquatic Center.
