Germany’s Laura Simon Headed to Virginia for College

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 16. THE recruiting news keeps on rolling as the University of Virginia has secured the commitment of Swimming World five-star recruit Laura Simon of Germany.

Simon is a strong breaststroker with top long course meter times of 1:09.55 in the 100 breast and 2:30.17 in the 200 breast. Simon has had some international meet experience, having put in time on the FINA World Cup circuit last year as part of a small Germany contingent that swam in Tokyo. She also nearly made the German Olympic team, finishing third in the 100 breast at Germany's Trials.

“I've chosen Virginia because I think they have a great team spirit and the coaches are great,” Simon told Swimming World. “The most important thing for me was to find a team which could be like a family to me, since I am so far away from home.”

Simon is a bit of a hidden gem as an international swimmer coming to the U.S. She's not currently ranked by CollegeSwimming.com. That doesn't mean Virginia is lacking in its recruiting class, however, as Simon joins the likes of six-star Leah Smith of the JCC Sailfish and five-star Kaitlyn Jones of the Delaware Swim Team as future Cavaliers in the Class of 2013.
