German Long Course Nationals: Yannick Lebherz, Annika Mehlhorn Win First-Day Titles

BERLIN, Germany, June 30. ONLY a pair of titles were on the line during the first day of swimming at the German Long Course Nationals held in Berlin.

Yannick Lebherz jumped to 12th in the world in the men's 400 IM this year with a top time of 4:16.77 for the win. Only 13 total swimmers have cleared 4:17 this year with the top-ranked time, for comparison, of 4:12.02 set by Japan's Yuya Horihata back in April at the Japanese Long Course Nationals. Morten Ahme placed second in 4:24.43, while Maximilian Kruger earned third overall in 4:28.32.

Annika Mehlhorn won the women's 200 IM title in 2:14.93, while Theresa Michalak took second in 2:15.42. Katharina Schiller completed the top three in 2:15.44.

Meanwhile in preliminary qualifying rounds, Stefan Herbst led the men's 100 back with a 55.32, while Daniela Samulski topped the women's 100 back in 1:00.99. Hendrik Feldwehr paced the men's 100 breast in 1:01.88, while Caroline Ruhnau had the top time in the women's 100 breast in 1:08.73.

Robin Backhaus picked up the top seed in the men's 400 free with a 3:56.29, while Paul Biedermann coasted into the finale with a fourth-seeded 3:56.40. In the sprint 50 free, Steffen Deibler posted a 22.18 for the top seed, while Dorothea Brandt turned in a 25.05 for the women's 50 free top seed. Deibler returned in the men's 50 fly with the top qualifying time of 23.52, while Lisa Vitting touched in 27.22 for the women's 50 fly top time.
