Georgia Women’s Swimming Wins 94th Straight Home Dual, Bulldogs Sweep Emory

ATHENS – The Georgia women’s swimming and diving team won its 94th consecutive home dual meet, while the men’s team also picked up a win as the Bulldogs swept NCAA Division III Emory in their final home meet of the season on Saturday. Meaghan Raab won three individual events for the Georgia women, while Matias Koski and Jay Litherland each picked up a pair of wins for the Georgia men.

Following a Senior Day ceremony where 17 swimmers and divers were recognized, Georgia swept Emory on Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The No. 1-ranked Lady Bulldogs recorded a 163-127 victory, while the second-ranked Bulldogs posted a 173-115 win. The Lady Bulldogs completed the dual meet portion of the season with an 11-0 record and the 13th undefeated season in school history. They also pushed their home win streak to 94 straight dating back to Nov. 8, 1995. The Bulldogs ended the season with an 8-2 record.

The Lady Bulldogs’ senior class went 39-2-1 during their careers, while the Bulldog seniors notched a 29-8-1 record.

“The seniors deserve the win,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “It’s always an mixed emotion kind of day. You’re glad they are having their last meet, but you’re also knowing that it’s their last meet. We won’t see them in this pool for a dual meet again, so we will miss them. But we are so proud of our kids. We had a bunch of really great performances today.”

Meaghan Raab paced the Lady Bulldogs as she posted three individual wins. She swept the breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 1:04.83 and the 200 in 2:18.60, and she won the 20 individual medley in 2:00.82.

Lauren Harrington, Hali Flickinger and Emily Cameron, Olivia Ball each won twice the Lady Bulldogs. Harrington went 22.74 and 49.56 to take the 50 and 100 freestyle races, respectively. Flickinger took the 1,000 freestyle in 9:47.41 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.22. Cameron won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.47 and the 500 freestyle in 4:52.05. Ball swept the 1- and 3-meter springboards with 324.15 and 369.08 points, respectively.

Other winners for the Lady Bulldogs were Courtney Peters in the 200 butterfly (2:02.28), Anna Neumeister in the 200 backstroke (1:58.69), Megan Kingsley in the 100 butterfly (54.62) and Nicole Vernon in the 400 individual medley (4:12.94).

The 200 medley relay of Olivia Smoliga, Raab, Harrington and Chantal Van Landeghem touched first in 1:41.95. Maddie Locus, Van Landeghem, Smoliga and Harrington finished first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.40.

Matias Koski and Jay Litherland were double winners for the Bulldogs. Koski won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.85 and the 100 butterfly in 48.84, while Litherland took the 200 individual medley in 1:50.24 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.16.

Other winners for the Bulldogs were Chris Powell in the 50 freestyle (20.92), Alec Cohen in the 200 freestyle (45.34), Kevin Litherland in the 500 freestyle (4:28.14), Garrett Powell in the 1,000 freestyle (9:17.59), Nicolas Fink in the 100 backstroke (49.09), Pace Clark in the 200 backstroke (1:48.27), Powell Brooks in the 200 butterfly (1:49.80), Derek Onken in the 400 individual medley (3:59.08), Crawford Berry on 1-meter (357.83 points) and Ian Forlini on 3-meter (397.88 points).

The 200 medley relay of Taylor Dale, Chase Kalisz, Clark and Koski won in 1:29.85. Michael Trice, Koski, Fink and Chris Powell touched first in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:21.29.

Georgia’s next competition will be the SEC Championship Feb. 17-21 at Auburn. The Lady Bulldogs have won five straight conference titles.

With the squad split between a pair of dual swimming and diving meets on Saturday afternoon, both the third-ranked Emory men and top-ranked Emory women earned wins at the University of the South, while falling at the NCAA Division I University of Georgia.

Emory suffered a 173-115 loss to the second-ranked Bulldog men, while the Emory women dropped their first dual meet of the season, falling 163-127 to the top-ranked NCAA Division I women’s program.

Despite the team losses, Emory turned in a number of strong performances against Georgia, including 16 NCAA qualifying marks. For the men, junior Andrew Wilson claimed the squad’s only first-place finish of the meet, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 56.65 seconds. He added a ‘B’ cut time in the 200-yard breaststroke as well, finishing second with a mark of 2:05.41.

Adding NCAA provisional qualifying performances for the men at the meet were senior Hayden Baker in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.57), junior Jared Scheuer in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.58) and sophomore Mitchell Cooper in the 400-yard individual medley (4:05.72). All three finished fourth in their respective events.

Freshman Ming Ong registered three NCAA ‘B’ cut times for the Emory women in Athens, finishing third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.19), and fourth in each of the 100-yard butterfly (57.25 seconds) and 400-yard individual medley (4:31.13). Senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg added ‘B’ cut times in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.52, third place) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.04, fourth place), and recorded the fastest 1,000-yard freestyle time of the year by an Eagle, finishing third in the event with a time of 10:17.81.

Freshman Cindy Cheng claimed provisional qualifying marks in both backstroke events, finishing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.83 seconds and third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.27. Other ‘B’ cut times for the Emory women came from sophomore Annelise Kowalsky in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.33, second place), junior Elizabeth Aronoff in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.76, second place), and the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Claire Liu, Kowalsky, sophomore Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe and senior Nancy Larson (1:45.29, third place). Junior Kellen Hope contributed with an NCAA qualifying score of 276.68 in the one-meter dive, finishing second in the event.

In Sewanee, the Eagles won 26 of the 32 events, including all but two of the swimming events (Emory did not send divers to compete in any of the four diving events), en route to the pair of wins. The Emory men earned a 148-108win over the Tigers, while the Eagles were victorious on the women’s side of the meet by a 138-128 score.

For the women, junior Mikayla Carnley won three individual events – the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:46.33), the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.05), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.00). Other multiple individual event winners for the women included junior MacKenzie Brosnahan in the 50-yard freestyle (24.95 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (55.18 seconds), freshman Megan Campbell in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.92) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.34) and junior Megan Freeman in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.30) and 200-yard individual medley (2:15.96). Adding first-place finishes for the Emory women on Saturday in Sewanee were senior Lexi Tutor in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.79), freshman Kike Afolabi-Brown in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.77) and freshman Alison Mai in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.29).

Emory also swept both women’s relays, with freshman Sia Beasley, Campbell, sophomore Kristine Rosenberger and Brosnahan winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:51.56, and Afolabi-Brown, Rosenberger, freshman Alexandra Brown and Brosnahan finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.08.

Emory claimed wins in both of the men’s relays as well on Saturday. In the 200-yard medley relay, freshman Brandon Shinsato, freshman Michael Grenon, senior Kevin Flood and sophomore David Tao won with a mark of 1:37.94, while in the 200-yard freestyle relay, Tao, Grenon, freshman Aaron Schwartz and sophomore Hayes Burdette-Sapp finished first in a time of 1:27.13.

Shinsato and Flood each won multiple individual events as well, with Shinsato finishing first in both the 100-yard backstroke (54.27 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.42), and Flood winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.30) and 200-yard individual medley (2:02.56). Senior Cameron Herting added a pair of wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:38.72) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.13).

Other Emory men to finish first in individual events included Burdette-Sapp in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.30), Grenon in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.36), freshman John Copses in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.73) and Tao in the 100-yard butterfly (2:02.56).

With the splits on Saturday, the Emory men ended their dual meet campaign with an overall record of 4-3, while the women wrapped up the campaign with an 8-1 mark.

Emory will have a week off to rest before hosting the 2015 University Athletic Association Championships at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, from Wednesday, February 11th through Saturday, February 14th.
