FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas, October 19. THE Georgia women’s swimming and diving team opened the Southeastern Conference portion of its schedule on Friday by defeating Arkansas 187-113 at the Arkansas Natatorium.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. Georgia also extended its win streak against SEC opponents to 28 straight.
“We had a good win today, and the kids did a good job,” Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. “I thought we were better than we swam on Wednesday against Georgia Tech, but we certainly have to be better next week against Florida. We’re getting there, but we’re not quite where we need to be. We’re always excited about winning a conference meet. Arkansas is a much-improved team from a year ago. They looked pretty good, and they had some good individuals as well. The kids did a good job and I felt we had a much better team performance than we did on Wednesday.”
The Lady Bulldogs were highlighted by double winners Hali Flickinger, Amber McDermott and Chantal Van Landeghem. Flickinger won the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.23) and 400-yard individual medley (4:15.03); McDermott claimed the 500-yard (4:50.00) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:50.78) events and Van Landeghem topped the 50-yard (23.59) and 100-yard freestyle (50.93) events.
Other winners include Ann-Perry Blank on the 1-meter springboard (278.85), Lauren Harrington in the 100-yard butterfly (55.87), Brittany MacLean in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.62), Melanie Margalis in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.06) and Anne Zhu in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.87).
The Lady Bulldogs 200-yard freestyle relay team of Allison Schmitt, Kelsey Gaid, Margalis and Megan Romano stopped the clock at 1:33.27 to finish the meet with one final win.
