Georgia vs. SMU

ATHENS, Georgia, January 7. BEHIND sophomores Erica Malagon and Michelle McKeehan, the Georgia women’s swimming and diving team extended a winning streak that is almost as old as they are.

The No. 1-ranked Lady Bulldogs (5-0) defeated No. 19 SMU 165-114 on Tuesday for their 68th consecutive victory in either a dual meet or a tri meet at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The streak began in the fall of 1995, when Malagon was five and McKeehan was six.

Malagon, an Athens native, won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.99 and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.32. McKeehan, who hails from Greenwood, Ind., claimed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.86 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:14.48.

Georgia opened Tuesday’s meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Megan Romano, Kelly McNichols, Lisa Caprioglio and Malagon stopped the clock in 1:42.42.

Adrienne Bicek took the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:03.12. Caprioglio touched first in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.50. Allison Schmitt won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.05. Anne-Marie Botek had a time of 23.05 to win the 50-yard freestyle. Morgan Scroggy took the 200-yard backstroke crown in 1:58.89.

Georgia exhibitioned the latter stages of the meet and had the top times in the 500-yard freestyle (McNichols, 4:51.26), the 100-yard butterfly (Caprioglio, 54.30), the 400-yard individual medley (Wendy Trott, 4:23.06) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Emily Montesinos, Malagon, Courtney Monsees and Romano, 3:26.06).

“I thought the young ladies did a great job today,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “Overall, we swam pretty well. And the streak continues, which is a good thing. I am pretty pleased with how everything went for us today.”

Both Georgia teams will return to action on Saturday at Texas.
