Georgia Leads After Day two of Georgia Invitational

ATHENS, Ga., Dec. 2. BOTH the Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving teams will begin the final day of competition of the Georgia Fall Invitational in first place tomorrow. The women used day two of the
three day meet to boost their lead to a healthy 889-518 over second place Clemson. Georgia's men will have to battle on Sunday to hold their lead, as No. 18 Minnesota trails only 709-703 after Saturday night.

"I feel a lot better about both teams than I did a week ago," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "Both teams rose up any time they had good competition. We are looking forward to a good day tomorrow."

Christine Keller, Maritza Correia and Stefanie Williams paced the women's squad in their run-away effort. Keller, a junior, placed first in the 100-yard back and butterfly events, earning a provisional time for NCAAs in the fly (55.24) and an automatic mark in the back (54.69).

Correia and Williams had the race of the evening as the teammates placed one-two in the 200-yard free with automatic qualifying times of 1:46.93 and 1:47.42.

On the men's side, freshmen Randy Lam and Kyle Salyards helped the Bulldogs hang onto their narrow lead over the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. Lam earned a provisional cut in winning the 400-IM (3:51.85)and Salyards took first in the 100-breast (55.71), also a provisional cut.

"We helped the team out today," said Salyards. "This meet has turned into us vs. Minnesota and we each out touched them in our events. Tomorrow is an important day."

The final day of the Georgia Fall Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with prelims and will be followed at 3 p.m. with finals. All competition is held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens.
