Georgia Gears Up For SEC Meet

COLUMBIA, S.C. February, 1. THE Georgia swimming and diving teams tuned up for next month's SEC Championships by knocking off South Carolina and Alabama in a tri-meet on Saturday at the Carolina Natatorium.

On the men's side, No. 12 Georgia topped No. 22 Alabama 158.5-140.5 and defeated South Carolina 197-103. The top-ranked Lady Bulldogs beat Alabama 207-91 and South Carolina 190-110.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season at 11-0, their third straight perfect season, while the Bulldogs improved to 7-3.

"The men went down to the last relay with Alabama, and they did a great job to get the win," Georgia head swimming coach Jack Bauerle said. "It was an ugly win, but we'll take it. We mucked one out. For the women, it was business as usual. We're proud of the undefeated season."

Sebastien Rouault won three times for the Bulldogs. He claimed top honors in the 1,000 freestyle (9:00.44), the 500 free (4:23.38) and the 400 individual medley (3:54.67). Chris Colwill and Jonathan Schmidt were double winners for Georgia. Colwill claimed the 1-meter dive with 356.30 points, then claimed the 3-meter event with a season-best 427.75 points. Schmidt was victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.27 and the 100 fly with a time of 49.54. Matt Owen (1:38.74 in the 200 free) and Gil Stovall (a season-best 1:49.89 in the 200 backstroke) also won for the Bulldogs.

On the women's side, Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce each won twice. DeScenza notched a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.48, then took the 100 fly in 55.03. Joyce's wins came in the 50 free in 23.45 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.53. Stephanie Carr (10:05.19 in the 1,000 free), Sarah Poewe (1:02.53 in the 100 breaststroke), Jessica Cole (51.85 in the 100 free), Aleksandra Putra (1:59.41 in the 200 back), Mhyria Miller (2:21.67 in the 200 breast) and Claire Maust (4:51.04 in the 500 free) also won for the Lady Bulldogs. Georgia also won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.73. Georgia's next competition will come Feb. 15-18 in Knoxville, Tenn., at the SEC Championships.
