Gannon Splits With Lake Erie

ERIE, Pennsylvania, October 19.THE Gannon women's and men's swimming teams produced 14 first-place finishes and recorded 29 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times during a season-opening split against Lake Erie Friday night at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The women earned a 192-70 victory while the men dropped a 140-122 decision.

The women's team won 12 of 14 events to easily post a 122-point victory. Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) fired off the starter block in the opener as a quadruple-winner. The sophomore was the first to finish in three different individual races. She won the 100-yard freestyle (54.69), the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.04) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.71). Her 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle times met PSAC standards.

Joseph was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that closed out the women's action with a victory. She joined forces with Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) and Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) to grab the gold in one minute and 41.10 seconds.

Kelsey Williams (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Lydic ended the night as triple-winners. Along with Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg), all three were part of the 200-yard medley relay team that opened the night with a victory in one minute and 52.38 seconds.

Williams touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.15) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.80). She qualified for PSAC's with both performances. Vincent added individual victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.59) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.63). Like Williams, both of Vincent's wins met conference standards.

In addition to being part of two winning relay teams, Lydic completed her triple crown with a 50-yard freestyle victory. Her time of 24.78 was one of two PSAC-qualifying times she recorded along with a 54.72 time in the 100-yard freestyle that placed second.

Other individual winners on the women's side include Charlene Lichota (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:15.69) and Fischl in the 200-yard IM (2:16.81). Fischl was a PSAC qualifier in the 200-yard IM, the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.84) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.23).

The women's PSAC-qualifying times were wrapped up by Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.53) and Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.55).

On the men's side, Lake Erie was able to win 12 of the 14 events during its victory. Nathan Bean (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) captured Gannon's lone individual men's win, touching the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle with a PSAC-qualifying time of 22.05 seconds.

Gannon's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) and Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) drew a close to the night with a first-place finish. The foursome produced a winning time of one minute and 27.90 seconds.

Nine Golden Knights combined to post 16 conference-qualifying times. Chase and Chrzanowski recorded three each. Chase performed the feat in the 100-yard freestyle (49.27), the 100-yard butterfly (53.08) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.33). Chrzanowski countered in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.04), the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.78) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.70).

Three Gannon male swimmers had a pair of conference-qualifying times. Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) swam the right times in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.71) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:09.16). Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) has PSAC times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.48) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.51). Wolhaupter did it in the 50-yard freestyle (22.29) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.21).

The men's PSAC-qualifying times concluded with Coughran in the 100-yard freestyle (49.72), Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.95) and Michael Decsey (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) in the 100-yard backstroke (56.65).

The Gannon women's swim team improved to 1-0 while the men's squad fell to 0-1. Lake Erie is now 1-0 in men's action and 0-1 in women's events. The Golden Knights return to action Friday, October 26 at the Westminster (Pa.) Relay Meet. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m.
