AUSTIN–The 2015 Texas 5A State meet looks to be a memorable one with freshman Gabrielle Kopenski on her way to breaking two 5A records during finals on Saturday.

Prosper freshman Gabrielle Kopenski is less than a second away from claiming the 5A record in the 500 free after a prelim time of 4:46.90 this morning, and currently sits only .15 seconds off of the 200 free 5A record of 1:47.65.

Julie Cook of Bryan will look to set a new 50 free 5A record. Cook is currently seeded with a 23.38, only .22 off the 5A record of 23.16. Magnolia West junior Hannah Dooley, currently seeded second with a 23.92, is sure to push Cook as she also pursues the 5A record.

Caitlin Clement, a sophomore from Magnolia high school, will be in pursuit of the 100 free 5A record after posting a time of 50.99 in prelims this morning. That puts Clement only .09 off of Skylar Smith’s 2009 record of 50.90.

Among the girls looking to break records will be senior Destiny Nelson as she pursues her own 100 back 5A record. Nelson finished prelims with a 54.97 putting her only .04 off her 2014 record of 54.93.

Brenham sophomore Hudson Smith will be in pursuit of the boys 100 breaststroke 5A record. He posted a 56.85 finishing time during prelims placing Ford Story’s 2012 time of 56.63 well within reach.

Saturday is sure to bring quick relay races, especially in the 200 medley relays. The girls 200 medley relays from Austin Vandegrift (1:49.28), Cedar Park (1:49.56), and Houston Stratford (1:49.67) are all within .39 seconds of each other after prelims.

On the boys side it will be the 200 medley relay teams of Humble Kingwood Park (1:35.42) and Frisco Wakeland (1:35.62) racing to the finish with a slim .20 separating them after prelims.

Finals will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
