FSU and UNC Women Win Relays On Opening Night of ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virg, February 18. EVEN though the team champion won’t be crowned until Saturday evening, the Florida State University women’s swimming and diving team started the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with a bang on Wednesday (February 18). The Seminoles began the league summit by capturing the 200 medley relay title.

“The fact that we won that last relay is huge,” FSU deck boss Neil Harper said. “The fashion that we won it in was huge too. It was good for our team to watch us win a close race. Both relays posted school records and you can’t ask for much more than that.” After just two events at the University of Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center, the Tribe finds itself just four points out of first place. The Seminoles trail North Carolina 74-70 with Maryland in third at 66 points.

“In the medley we thought we had the team to win, but to get it done under the pressure is another thing,” Harper added. “That really ignited our team and we’re excited about the rest of the week. Emily led off with her best time and then Lauren got us out there and Rachel held on to it. Emma brought it home for us, it’s good to have someone like here at the end.”

The North Carolina Tar Heels lead after the first day of competition of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship, being held at the Aquatics and Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Virginia. Both the 2004 ACC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be conducted over four days, with the 800-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay being swum on Wednesday evening.

The Tar Heels scored 74 points, leading Florida State which tallied 70 points. Maryland stands third with 66 points, while Virginia finished the evening in fourth. Rounding out the field are Duke (52), Clemson (50), Georgia Tech (50) and NC State (48).

The University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team, led by an Atlantic Coast Conference record setting performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay, took a small lead after the first day of the 2004 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Virginia's Aquatics and Fitness Center Wednesday evening. After two events, the Tar Heels have scored 74 points in the meet and lead second place Florida State by four points. Maryland is third with 66 points, followed by Virginia with 62, Duke with 52, Clemson and Georgia Tech with 50 and NC State with 48.

UNC was led by the performance of its 800-yard freestyle relay team which established a new Atlantic Coast Conference record at 7:13.33, breaking the old mark of 7:14.39 set by UNC in 2001. The old record was set by a quartet of storied UNC All-Americas in Kelly Weeks, Jessi Perruquet, Katie Hathaway and Erika Acuff, but it was shattered Wednesday night as the team of Virginia Hanson, Weeks, Amanda Smith and Perruquet broke the record by 1.06 seconds. Hanson led off the relay with a personal record time of 1:48.97 in the 200-yard freestyle and she was followed by outstanding splits turned in by Weeks (1:48.85), Smith (1:48.55) and Perruquet (1:46.96). Maryland finished second in the relay at 7:17.92.
