Frostburg State, Mary Washington vs. St. Mary’s

ST. MARY'S CITY, Maryland, January 13. IT was a historical win for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team Friday afternoon as the Seahawks (13-0, 5-0) recorded the program's first-ever triumph over the 21-time defending Capital Athletic Conference champion, University of Mary Washington, posting a convincing 122-83 league win over Mary Washington.

The Seahawks captured seven of 11 events as today's win over Mary Washington snapped a 21-meet losing streak against the Eagles since the series began in 1990-91. This is also the first-ever loss for the Eagles in conference action.

Today's meet was a double-dual meet with Frostburg State University as well and St. Mary's tallied a 165-29 win over the FSU Bobcats to remain undefeated on the season and in conference action.

Junior captain Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) registered three individual wins on the day. Heyde started the meet with a first-place finish in the 1000 freestyle in 10:57.74 while sophomore Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) came in third in 11:14.34.

Heyde followed with a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley despite losing her goggles after the backstroke portion of the event. She claimed the event in 2:14.64 while first-year Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) took second in 2:16.77.

Heyde finished the meet by leading a sweep of the 200 butterfly, touching the wall first in 2:12.38 followed by Raab in second (2:19.05) and senior captain Katie Serfling (Frederick, Md./Urbana) in third (2:21.95).

First-year Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) was the next multiple winner for the Seahawks as Kohles claimed a pair of gold medals. She started with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.93 while fellow classmate Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came in third in 2:05.38.

Kohles' other win came in the 500 freestyle as she touched wall first in 5:26.35 while O'Connor claimed second in 5:27.60. Abernathy notched a first-place finish of her own in the 100 freestyle (56.54) as she out-touched UMW's Jessica Singer by three-hundredths of a second. First-year Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) completed the list of winners for St. Mary's as Hafey claimed the 200 backstroke in 2:15.56.

Sophomore Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took second in the 50 freestyle in 26.02 while junior Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana) placed third in 26.38. Raab picked up a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.93 while D'Ambrosio was third (2:32.71).

The Seahawk 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays both finished second.

St. Mary's will return to action next Friday, January 20 as the Seahawks travel to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team improved to 11-2 (4-1 CAC) on the season as the Seahawks posted a 167-21 win over Frostburg State University but dropped a 124-81 decision to the University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference double dual meet Friday afternoon.

Junior Cameron Hedquist (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) was the only multiple winner for the Seahawks as Hedquist started the afternoon with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.60. Sophomore Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) came in second in 1:48.51.

Hedquist's second win came in the 500 freestyle as he touched the wall first in 4:51.37 while first-year Jackson Holden (Valley Lee, Md./Great Mills) finished third in 5:11.39.

Junior captain Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton) notched an individual win in the 1000 freestyle in 10:12.22 while Holden was third in 10:41.60. First-year Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) picked up the Seahawks' fourth win in the 200 backstroke as Cope finished first in 2:00.56.

Petersen came in second in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.38 followed by first-year Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) in third in 2:06.21. DeBoissiere had a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.38 while the 400 medley relay team of Cope, DeBoissiere, Witkop and Hedquist came in second in 3:40.54.

Cope finished third in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.07 while the 400 freestyle relay team of seniors Gabe Grace (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) and Joe Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), junior captain Chris Coghill (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick), and Holden took third in 3:29.65.

Witkop recorded a fourth-place in the 50 freestyle in 24.16 while Kelly was fourth in the 100 freestyle in 52.28.

St. Mary's will return to action next Friday, January 20 as the Seahawks travel to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
