Franklin and Marshall vs. Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Maryland, November 21. VISITING Franklin & Marshall College won eight of the nine contested events en route to a 121-69 Centennial Conference men's swimming victory over host Washington College this afternoon at Casey Swim Center. The Diplomats improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in conference meets with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-2 and 0-2 with the loss.

Junior Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) won the 400 individual medley in 4:28.64 for the Shoremen in the loss. Sophomore Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley)received the first-place points in the 200 breaststroke by swimming the second-fastest time of 2:21.07. (Franklin & Marshall entered the final two events as exhibitions only.)

Sophomore Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven) finished second in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.42. Longworth, Auger, senior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military), and senior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield)were second in the 400 medley relay in a Washington College season-best time of 3:47.79.

The Shoremen return to action December 5th and 6th at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.

Meanwhile, the Washington College women won seven of 11 events, including three first-place finishes and a pool record by junior Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook), but it was not enough as visiting Franklin & Marshall posted a 108-97 Centennial Conference women's swimming victory this afternoon at Casey Swim Center. The Diplomats moved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in conference meets, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference meets.

Glasser broke the pool record in the 1000 freestyle by winning in a Washington College season-best time of 10:39.96. She also won the 200 butterfly in 2:16.64 and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.81. Senior Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) won the 100 freestyle in 55.04 and was second in the 200 freestyle in a personal-best 1:59.87 to move up to sixth all-time in the Shorewomen's top swimmers ever in that event. Sophomore Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) won the 50 freestyle in 25.10 and was second in the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best and personal-best time of 2:33.88.

Senior Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) won the 100 backstroke in a WC season-best time of 2:21.19. Freshman Darcy Zink (Baltimore, MD/Towson) was second in the same event in 2:21.77. Zink, Moore, Gerhart, and sophomore Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) won the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 4:11.84.

Freshman Melanie Craig (Newtown, PA/Council Rock) became WC's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 breaststroke with her third-place time of 2:35.98.

The Shorewomen return to action December 5th and 6th at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
