Four U.S. World Record-Holders To Be In U.S. Contingent at FINA World Championships in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Four male swimmers who set five world records during the just concluded U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming have committed to compete in the 7th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Oct. 7-11 in Conseco Fieldhouse.

Leading the list is 19-year-old Michael Phelps, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in a record six individual events and will be bidding for an unprecedented eight gold medals in next month’s Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

At the Trials in Long Beach, Calif., Phelps broke his own world record in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:08.41.

Other world record-holders committed to the World Championships (25m) are Brendan Hansen, Aaron Peirsol and Ian Crocker.

Hansen broke two world records, establishing new marks in the 100-meter breaststroke (:59.30) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:09.04). Peirsol broke the world record in the 200-meter backstroke in a time of 1:54.74 and Crocker set the world record in the 100-meter butterfly in a time of :50.76.

“I've said all along, this could be the strongest team since 1976,” said University of Texas and Olympic men's coach Eddie Reese. “As far as world records, this is an extraordinary team.”

“We are overjoyed at the prospect of seeing these world record-holders in action in the unique setting of Conseco Fieldhouse in October,” said Joe DeGroff, chairman of the Organizing Committee for the World Championships. “We are confident these swimmers will have tremendous performances in Athens and will ride the wave of that momentum right on to Indianapolis.”

Phelps visited Conseco Fieldhouse in April and came away impressed. An eight-lane 25-meter competition pool and six-lane 25-meter warmup pool will be built on the floor of the Fieldhouse for the event.

“This will take place in an arena everyone knows and I think it will make it that much more exciting,” Phelps said at the time. “It will be great to come back to Indianapolis. I made my first Olympic team (in 2000) there and I set a world record there in the 400 IM at the Duel in the Pool (at the IU Natatorium in April of 2003) so I’ve been pretty good (in Indianapolis) throughout my career.”
