Forty-Three Named to US Olympic Team

BY Phillip Whitten

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 14. FORTY-THREE swimmers – 21 men and 22 women — were named to the 2004 US Olympic Swimming Team last night at the conclusion of the US Olympic Trials in Long Beach.

The American squad is led by 19 year-old Michael Phelps, who will attempt to equal or surpass Mark Spitz's unparalleled seven Olympic gold medals from the 1972 Games in Munich. Phelps will swim the 200-meter freestyle, both butterfly and both medleys. He is also likely to swim on at least two of the three US relays.

Seven members of the team are current world record-holders: Ian Crocker (100-m butterfly), Brendan Hansen (100- and 200-m breaststroke), Lenny Krayzelburg (100-m backstroke), Aaron Peirsol (200-m backstroke) and Michael Phelps (200-m butterfly, and 200- and 400-m medley) for the men; Amanda Beard (200-m breaststroke) and Natalie Coughlin (100-m backstroke) for the women.,

Interestingly, the US team has two sets of siblings: Klete and Kalyn Keller, and Tara and Dana Kirk. The Kirks are the first set of sisters to make a US Olympic swim team, while the Kellers are the third brother-sister combination in US Olympic history.

Teri McKeever, coach of Natalie Coughlin, was named to the coaching staff yesterday and becomes the first woman ever to serve as a US Olympic swimming coach.

Four-time Olympian Jenny Thompson is the team's oldest woman while Gary Hall, Jr., at 29, is not only the oldest man on the team, but the oldest man to represent the US in Olympic swimming since Duke Kahanamoku, who was 33 in 1924.

Larsen Jensen, at 18, is the youngest man on the team. Fifteen year-old Katie Hoff is the team's youngest woman. Overall, the men's team averages 23 years of age, the women's 21.

The following is a list of the members of the US Olympic swimming team and the events they are swimming:
