Former Swiss Olympic Coach Flavio Bomio Jailed for Child Sex Abuse

LUGANO, Switzerland, August 9. FLAVIO Bomio, Switzerland’s head coach for the 2000 Olympic Games, has been jailed for child sexual abuse spanning a 10-year period. The 71 year old was found guilty by Lugano judge Marco Villa.

“Flavio Bomio acted with pre-meditation,” Villa said in a statement after sentencing Bomio to 11 years in prison.

Bomio, the former president of the Bellinzona Swimming Club, was indicted for abuse against 15 boys during a period that spanned from 1997 through 2007 with approximately 400 accounted acts of abuse against boys that were all 16-and-under. The sexual abuse ran from inappropriate touching to rape, with some abuse lasting for years.

However, while the court would only take into consideration more recent abuses, Blick.ch reports that Bomio’s abuse can first be recorded as beginning more than 40 years ago.

Bomio also served as the Honorary Secretary of the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee.
