Form Followed in Women’s 100 Free Preliminaries

By Duncan Scott

Long Beach, CA, July 11 – THE TOP four qualifiers for tonight’s semi-finals included lead seeds Natalie Coughlin, California Aquatics (First;::26.64; :55.23), Amanda Weir, Swim Atlanta (Second; :27.11; :55.30) and Jenny Thompson, Badger/Seacoast, (Fourth; :26.74; :55.45, together with Kara Lynn Joyce, Club Wolverine, current NCAA 100 free champion for Georgia who was third (:27.13; :55.42).

The depth in the event was breathtaking. Erin Phenix, Longhorn, a 2000 Olympian for the 4 x 100 freestyle relay Erin Phenix, Longhorn, squeezed in 16th at :56.53 (27.21). And remember, the top four automatically qualify for the team in this event, with adequate “doubles” usually occurring to add the fifth and sixth finishers as well. Spots in the final heat are truly coveted and with this depth they will be truly earned.

Fifth through 16th places included six new or former Olympians (Lindsay Benko, Trojan, seventh at :56.06[:27.45]; Gabrielle Rose, California Aquatics, eighth at :56.15[:26.82); Rhi Jeffrey, Florida Atlantic, ninth at :56.18[:27.49]; Courtney Shealy, Athens Bulldogs, tied for tenth at :56.19[:27.27]; Haley Cope, California Aquatics, 12th at :56.29[:26.82]; and Phenix).

Also qualified in that range are a former American record holder at 100 yards freestyle (Maritza Correia, Broward Aquatics, fifth at :55.63[:26.77]), a former 50-100-200 Free NCAA triple winner (Colleen Lanne, NOVA, sixth at :55.95[:26.92] and the second place finisher in this event at last summer’s National Championships (Stephanie Williams, Athens Bulldogs, 13th at :56.39[:27.22])! There are no weak links. The move from semi-final to final will be as difficult in this event as any in the entire competition.

About the only surprise in missing the cut to 16 was last night’s 200 champion Dana Vollmer, Ft.Worth, who swam :57.01 for 22nd.

Also worthy of note was the effort of 33-year-old Katrina Radke, Swimcraft, who won her heat and improved from 47th seed to 34th place with :57.49. Radke was a 1988 Olympic finalist in the 200 butterfly, but then suffered ill effects of chronic fatigue syndrome for years until quite recently. You can read about the joy she has had returning to unencumbered physical activity – and the highest levels of competition – in a story available now in the SWIMINFO.com Premium area available to Swimming World magazine subscribers.
