Foothill, Campolindo Win Crowns at CIF North Coast Section Swimming and Diving Championships

By Brian Savard

CONCORD, California, May 24. KATE Dwelley, the Stanford-bound Liberty senior, turned heads with her scorching performances in the California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section Championships.

Dwelley just missed the national high school record in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:45.96. Dwelley reset her 2006 meet record of 1:46.28 with her first-place swim in finals. Dwelley also clocked a 49.46 in the 100 freestyle. She left her mark on the meet with a 22.97 leadoff split in the 200 freestyle relay. That 50 time erased the former standard of 23.04 set just a few events prior by Carondelet's Kasey Carlson.

Team Scores

In the women's team competition, Foothill barely edged out Carondelet for the first-place team finish. Foothill scored 233.50 points over the course of the meet while Carondelet shadowed behind in second with 232 points. Las Lomas picked up the third-place spot with 192 points.

The men's competition saw Campolindo snare the top honors with a total of 212 points. Marin Catholic placed second with 196 points while San Ramon Valley took third with 176 points.

Women's Individual Results

Aside from Dwelley's assault on the clock, two other swimmers rose above the competition to win two individual events. Amanda Sims from Montgomery, who will swim for the University of California next year, easily won the 100 butterfly (54.81) and tied for first in the 100 backstroke (56.84).

Kasey Carlson set two records in both of her individual events, but only one of her records left the meet standing. Carlson swam a 23.04 50 freestyle, which eclipsed the former 2000 standard of 23.08 set by Campolindo's Kim Vandenberg. Dwelley broke Carlson's record with a 22.97 swim in the leadoff split of Liberty's 200 freestyle relay. Carlson also eclipsed Laura Davis's 2000 1:02.21 100 breaststroke record with a time of 1:01.97 in the preliminary heats.

Men's Individual Results

Cullen Hennessy of Sir Francis Drake snatched up first-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle (1:39.99) and the 500 freestyle (4:31.78). Nick Ferrif of Acalanes placed first in both of his individual events and picked up a North Coast Section record in the 100 breaststroke. Ferrif won the 100 butterfly in 50.62 before closing out the meet with a meet-record 55.90 in the 100 breaststroke. Sam Schwartz of Tamalpais set the former 56.19 record back in 1987.

Marin Catholic just missed the three-relay sweep, settling for wins in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The quartet of Kevin Claypool, Ruedi Keller, Justin Sangster and Walter Eggert bested the field in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.01. Marin Catholic's crew of Wes Bochner, Anthony Perez, Sangster and Eggert touched first in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:11.66.

Diving Results

Rebecca Payne of Foothill finished first in the women's diving competition with a score of 410.05. Laura Winn from Acalanes took the silver with a 398.30 score while Katie Thralls placed third (367.20).

Amador Valley's Tyler Pullen brought home the gold in the diving competition on the men's side with a 467.00 score. Trevor Graifman of Antioch and Cody Sunkel of Las Lomas took second and third with scores of 435.00 and 430.55, respectively.
