Florida State ‘s Men’s Swimming & Diving Swims Past FAU, 162-121

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s men’s swimming and diving team came from behind to defeat Florida Atlantic, 162-121, Saturday afternoon at the Bobby E. Leach Aquatic Center on the FSU campus in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles placed first 14 times and were led by Alan Ribeiro, Devin Crock and Louie Gagnet who each won two individual events. The Tribe now run their record to 8-2 overall and 10-0 all-time against FAU.

Florida Atlantic took an early 26-10 lead after winning the first two events, however, the Seminoles quickly regrouped and won the last 14 events. Ribeiro picked up the Tribe’s first win of the day by beating out teammate Michael Averett to the wall in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:43.08. Later in the day, Ribeiro placed first in the 500 free (4:42.06) and helped the 200 free relay squad to a first-place finish (1:24.19).

Crock won his first event in the 100-yard backstroke, turning in an impressive time of 50.64. In the 100 butterfly, Crock edged teammate Joey Marshburn for first place with a time of 51.07. The Seminoles third multiple-winner of the day was diver Louie Gagnet. Gagnet continued his outstanding freshman season by placing first on the one (198.8) and three-meter (207.1).

The best race of the day was the 50-yard freestyle sprint. Joey Marshburn and Nnamnse Ammons, who holds FSU’s top time in the 50 free this season, battled it out right to the finish. Marshburn came away with the victory, out touching Ammons by one-hundredth of a second, with a time of 20.88.

The following FSU swimmers also won their respected events: Wickus Nienaber (100 breaststroke, 57.23), Matt Wheeler (200 fly, 1:51.85), Michael Paulus (100 free, 46.96), Chris Lang (200 back, 1:53.01), Tal Stricker (200 breast, 2:04.85), and Justin Betts (400 individual medley, 4:06.65).

The Seminoles return to action on Friday, January 25, when they host Alabama. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the Bobby E. Leach Aquatic Center.
