Florida On Top After Day One Of All Florida Invite

GAINESVILLE, Florida, October 3. THE University of Florida men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won 11 events Friday night to jump out to the lead after day one at the Pinch A Penny All Florida Invitational in Gainesville.

On the men’s side, the Gators racked up 404 points to top Florida State (277) and Nova Southeastern (201). The Florida women scored 346 points tonight to lead California (245), Florida Gulf Coast (201), Florida State (195), Miami (124), Nova Southeastern (49) and North Florida (34).

Florida juniors Corey Main and Natalie Hinds led the way with three wins apiece on night one. Main won the men’s 50 free in 20.30 and also contributed legs on Florida’s winning 200 free relay and 400 medley relay. Hinds touched first in the women’s 50 free (22.44) and swam on both of Florida’s winning relays as well.

Florida swept the women’s and men’s 500 freestyles, as Jessica Thielmann touched first in the women’s 500 free in 4:47.82 and Mitch D’Arrigo claimed the men’s title in 4:24.67. California earned a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM, as Celina Li held off a hard-charging Elizabeth Pelton down the stretch, 1:58.81 to 1:59.03. Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez then led a 1-2-3 Florida finish in the men’s 200 IM as he touched in 1:47.58, just ahead of teammate Matt Elliott (1:47.95) and Mark Szaranek (1:49.62).

Florida swept all four relays contested tonight, winning the women’s 200 free relay (1:30.69) and 400 medley relay (3:41.26), and the men’s 200 free relay (1:20.85) and 400 medley relay (3:14.90).
