Florida Gulf Coast Swimming and Diving Sweeps Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech

FORT MYERS – The Florida Gulf Coast swimming and diving team swept Georgia Tech and Florida Atlantic, while the Georgia Tech men downed Florida Atlantic in a three-team meet at the FGCU Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

On the women’s side, FGCU topped Georgia Tech (183-54) and Florida Atlantic (160-83), while Florida Atlantic beat Georgia Tech, 134-103. The Georgia Tech men topped Florida Atlantic, 166-39.

The FGCU women’s & diving team (5-1, 1-0 CCSA) rode 18 top-three finishes on Friday to a pair of victories at home over Georgia Tech and Florida Atlantic by scores of 183-54 and 160-83, respectively. The Eagles went 3-0 this week at their home pool and did so by a combined score of 500-229.

“Today the girls raced really tough,” head coach Neal Studd said. “We’ve been doing a lot of running and lifting and swimming and they’re pretty sore. I think all three team probably are but we saw some great racing. The girls stepped up we were maybe a little bit better than I thought we would be because we’re a little beat up. I’m excited about their effort and that kind of team spirit. It was a pretty good day.”

The 200 yard Medley Relay led off the morning and it was the team of Kira Toussaint (Amstelveen, Netherlands/Keizer Karel College), Evita Leter (Paramaribo, Suriname/Doral Academy), Emma Svensson (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and Becky Derogatis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Indian River/Cardinal Gibbons HS) leading the way with a final time of 1:43.55.

The FGCU team of Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School), Katie Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey), Yee Ching Wong (Hong Kong, China/Dlocesan Girls’ School) and Maggie Holling (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I Leonard) finished second with a time of 1:47.26.

The Eagles placed two swimmers in the top three by the end of the 1000 yard Freestyle. Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursala’s Secondary School) and Nina Schiffer (Dortmund, Germany/SG Dortmund) finished one-two with times of 10:15.92 and 10:20.13, respectively. Cabrera continued to show her long-distance dominance later on with a third place finish in the 500 yard Free (5:05.23).

Armitage posted the lone FGCU top-three finish in the 200 yard Free with a second place touch time of 1:52.48. In the following race it would be Svensson and Derogatis pacing the crowd and finished first and second with times of 23.39 and 24.42, respectively.

Wong picked up a victory in the 200 yard IM touching in at 2:08.10 with Vilorio following closely behind in third with a time of 2:10.89. In Wong’s next race she would pick up a second place finish in the 100 yard Butterfly while Vilorio waited for the 100 yard Backstroke to pick up another top three, finishing just behind Toussaint who touched in at 56.87.

Svensson found victory once again in the 100 yard Free with a time of 50.94 beating out her teammate Ellen Vann (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) who finished third (54.33). In the 100 yard Breaststroke, Armitage won for the first time on Friday afternoon with a time of 1:05.94 with her teammate Leter placing third.

In the final women’s event of the day it was the relay team of Derogatis, Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy), Kristin Julien (San Fernand, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Stephen’s College) and Toussaint shining with a first place finish and a final touch time of 1:36.75.

The Eagles will open up the New Year at home on Jan. 3 when they welcome CCSA rival Liberty along with Campbell and Central Connecticut State. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m.

Florida Atlantic University men’s and women’s swimming and diving faced Florida Gulf Coast and Georgia Tech on Friday and came away with 16 top-three finishes and a win for the women against Georgia Tech.

Senior Anett Kovacs was the women’s top performer on the day, earning first place in the 100 fly (56.19) and 500 free (5:01.41). She was also part of the 200 freestyle relay team, which included Frida Nilsson, Iwona Lefanowicz and Carlee Jackson, that took third place with a time 1:38.20.

Junior Agi Bucz also had a strong showing, claiming first place in the 200 free (1:51.62) and second place in the 100 free (51.24). She also helped the 200 medley relay team of Rachel Crino, Hannah Roper and Nilsson take third place (1:47.61).

Abbey King came in second place in both the 500 free (5:04.01) and the 1000 free (10:20.13). In the 50 free, senior Nilsson was the Owls’ top finisher earning third place with a final time of 24.55. Crino finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.65 while Lefanowicz followed in fourth with a time of 58.72. Roper had a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke coming in at 1:08.22.

The women’s team had two personal bests during the meet. Sophomore Breanna Saukas had a career best time of 11:00.29 in the 1000 free. Sahra El-Hamaki set a personal best in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.35.

The divers had a good showing with freshman Alexa Elkins coming in first in the 1 meter dive with a final score of 260.4 and second in the 3 meter with a final score of 258.45. Kiley Kuether was close behind, taking second place in the 3 meter with a score of 258.00 and fourth in the 1 meter with a score of 236.62.

On the men’s side, senior Richard Andrews was the top performer after earning second in the 200 free (1:42.99), third in the 500 free (4:46.09), and was part of the 200 freestyle relay team including Cole Wisecarver, John Brennock and Torbjorn Persson that took second place with a final time of 1:26.52.

Sophomore John Nolte finished second in the 200 IM with a final time of 1:56.43 and came in sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.94). Nick Landi finished right ahead of him in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.85, which was good for fifth place.

FAU took fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200 medley relay with the fourth place team of Wisecarver, Nolte, Persson and Brennock coming in at 1:37.10. Persson was the Owls’ top finisher in the 50 free with a personal best time of 21.45. Freshman Aaron Spence set a lifetime best in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.90, which earned him eighth place.

The women claimed victory over Georgia Tech with a total of 134 to 103 but fell to FGCU 160 to 83. The men fell to Georgia Tech 166 to 39. Swimming and diving will return home to Boca Raton to host the FAU Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. where they will face Marywood and Old Dominion.
