Florida Atlantic, Florida International vs. Florida State

BOCA RATON, Florida, October 8. THE Florida State swimming and diving team opened its dual meet season with victories against Florida Atlantic and Florida International on Friday. The men defeated the Owls 163-137, while the women beat both FAU (226-72) and FIU (245-55).

"I think we had an okay meet," head coach Neil Harper said. "The women competed very well in their second and third best events today and I was happy with their performance. On the men's side we're not necessarily strong enough to take teams lightly. We'll take the win but there's a lot to learn."

For both the men and women it was depth that carried the Seminoles to victory. For the women (2-0), 10 different swimmers and divers won events led by senior C.J. Hendry who won both the 100 fly (57.65) 200 fly (2:05.73). Freshmen Julia Henkel and Tiffany Oliver also continued their strong starts to the season winning the 200 free and 50 free respectively. Freshman diver Kelsey Goodman also earned her first career victory as a Seminole with a win on the one-meter board (285.55).

"That's what it's going to take for the girls to have success," Harper said. "We have a lot of talent and a lot of depth. We had a lot of people get first and seconds and I was happy with their performance and we are a very well rounded team right now."

On the men's side nine different Noles (1-0), won an event. The divers led the way for the Garnet and Gold, taking the top five positions on both the one and three-meter. Senior Landon Marzullo won the one-meter (366.60) and senior Mike Neubacher won the three-meter (363.30). Fresh off his win in the 50 free at the State of Florida Invite, sophomore Mark Weber once again won the "Splash and Dash," in a time of 21.39.

"We lost a little bit of pride and thanks to our diver we were able to win," Harper said. "We didn't respond to the long bus ride today very well on the men's side and I would like to see us fight more."

Florida State returns to the pool on Saturday at 11:00 p.m., for a meet against new program Nova Southeastern. For results and recaps from this weekend's meets, log onto www.seminoles.com
