Flash! Two Aussie Records in Prelims at Olympic Trials: 50 Breaststroke to Brooke Hanson, 50 Free to Michelle Engelsman

By Stephen J. Thomas

SYYDNEY, Australia, April 2. BROOKE Hanson (pictured) continued her brilliant form at this meet when she broke her own national record by 0.16 of a second to become only the fourth swimmer to go under the 31-second mark. Hanson touched in 30.92 to break the record she set just last month in Canberra.

Earlier the much-travelled 25-year-old Michelle Engelsman clocked a very impressive 24.83 to break Libby Lenton’s national standard in the 50 freestyle set in Indianapolis last April by 0.09 of a second. Engelsman recently returned from some time training with Gary Hall, Jr., at his Race Club in Florida having already set a PR 25.17 – until now the fastest time in the world for 2004 – during her stay in the US.
