Fort Lauderdale, Aug. 12. Seventeen year-old Michael Phelps smashed Tom Dolan's American record in the 200m Individual Medley tonight, touching in 1:58.68. Dolan's mark was 1:59.77, swum at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he won silver.
Phelps' effort was the third fastest time in history. The world record stands at 1:58.16, set by Finland's Jani Sievinen at the 1994 World Championships in Rome and Sievinen's 1:58.61 in 1995.
