FLASH!! Emma Does It Again — Lowers 100m Breast Record

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 16. EMMA Igelstrom, the Swedish Streak, streaked to another world record in the 100m breaststroke this evening on the final day of competition at the Swedish National Short Course Championships.

Igelstrom, 23, clocked 1:05.11 for the four-lap race, lowering her own world mark of 1:05.29 set yesterday during the semifinals. That swim, in turn, had erased the 1:05.38 she set at last year's Short Course World Championships in Moscow.

Igelstrom split 30.48 – 34.63 in tonight's record swim.

Though Igelstrom's swim was the most spectacular tonight, there were other outstanding efforts.

Olympic gol;d medalist Lars Frolander won two events. After trailing in third place halfway through the 100 fly, he pulled away for the win in 52.25 seconds, well off the meet record of 51.83 he swam in yesterday's semis. Eighteen year-old Erik Anderson finished second in a national junior record 52.94.

Frolander came back later to snare the 200 free in 1:45.43.

Stefan Nystrand twice broke the meet record in the 50 breast. Better known as a freestyle sprinter, Nystrand clocked 27.69 for the breaststroke sprint in the semis, then went a faster 27.40 in finals. Second went to Martin Gustavsson in 27.64, also under the old meet mark. Joakim Nielsen, 18, set a national junior mark of 27.98 in semis.

Former Cal star Matthias Ohlin won the 100 back in 53.89, while former SMU standout Micke Jacobsson was the winner of the 400 IM in 4:18.68.

On the women's side, Therese Alshammar made it a sweep of the freestyle sprints when she won the 100 meters in 53.41 (split: 25.79).

Mia Boden trail;ed Gabriella Fagundez for 190 meters in the 200 fly, but overtook the tiring Fagundez in the final few strokes to nab the win, 2:12.65 to 2:12.90.

Hanna Eriksson, 18, winner of the 100 IM yesterday, stroked to victory in the 200 today in 2L15.64.

Emile Kierkegaard out-touched flyer Anna-Karin kammerling in the 50 back, 28.70 to 28.78. Camilla Johansson, who won both the 100 and 200 meters, only managed a 10th-place finish in the semis.

Teresa Gieholt took the 800 free in 8:46.96.
