Flanders Swimming Cup: Pair of Belgian Records Fall in Final Day Including Oldest Record on Books

ANTWERP, Belgium, January 13. THE final day of swimming at the 2008 Flanders Swimming Cup ended with a bang as a pair of Belgian records fell by the wayside. The oldest standing Belgian record tumbled after 27 years as Silke Van Hoof posted a quick time in the women's 100 back.

Mathieu Fonteyn started the final day of swimming with a win in the men's 50 fly when he clocked a 24.82. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Zoe Baker touched out Janne Schaeffer, 31.68 to 31.70, in the women's 50 breast.

Israel's Shai Livnat picked up another victory with a 50.65 in the men's 100 free, while Sweden's Josefin Lillhage dominated the women's 200 free with a time of 1:59.72.

Greece's Tryfonas Trivizas touched first in the men's 100 breast with a time of 1:03.35, while Van Hoof broke one of the longest standing records on the books with a Belgian record time of 1:02.86 in the women's 100 back. The previous standard of 1:03.82 had stood since Carine Verbauwen set it on July 23, 1980.

Stef Verachten followed that performance up with a Belgian record of his own in the men's 400 free with a time of 3:52.62 to lower his own standard of 3:53.38.

Next, Shana Vereecken won a close contest for the women's 200 IM when she touched in 2:26.32. Laura Deconinck (2:26.89) and Joyce Caluewaerts (2:26.96) also finished in the 2:26 range in the event.

Greece's Georgios Demetis hit first in the men's 200 back with a time of 2:01.96, while Elise Matthysen won the women's 200 breast in 2:28.78.

Fonteyn earned his second victory of the day with a 200 fly time of 1:59.46, while Kimberly Buys missed her Belgium 100 fly record of 59.71 with a winning effort of 59.93.

Greece's Vasileios Demetis garnered the men's 400 IM title in 4:18.73, while Lillhage pocketed her second title with a 25.77 in the women's 50 free.

Bruno Claeys touched out Greece's Ioannis Kokkodis, 27.04 to 27.07, in the men's 50 back, while Greece's Eleftheri Efstathiou dominated the women's 800 free in 8:45.70.
