Fitter And Faster Drill Of The Week: Head Up Butterfly With Adam Brown

Drill-Of-Week-Head-Up

Welcome to the “Drill of the Week” sponsored by The Fitter and Faster Swim Tour presented by Swimoutlet.com. Swimming World will provide you with a weekly tip or drill from an elite level swimmer to make you a smarter and faster swimmer.

This week’s drill is Head Up Butterfly presented by Olympic Gold Medalist Tyler McGill and demonstrated by two-time British Olympian Adam Brown. This drill is designed to work on the entry and catch of your butterfly stroke.

Pushing off the wall, start swimming butterfly with your head out of the water looking straight ahead. It is very important to keep your head still and looking forward as you move down the length of the pool. This will allow you to see where your hands are entering the water. Ideally, you want them about shoulder width apart and setting right into a powerful catch position.

This is a great drill to remind you of the importance of setting an immediate catch in your butterfly stroke. While there are many skills that need to be developed for an effective butterfly, establishing a strong pull and immediate catch will help develop a consistent stroke that can be sustained throughout a practice or race. For older swimmers, this is a great drill to work on improving tempo for the 50 and 100 butterfly.
