Finnish Grand Prix Concludes with Close Races

The 2015 Finnish Grand Prix concluded July 5 in Helsinki, Finland. Finals began with Mimosa Jallow crushing the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:00.75. She was three seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

In the men’s 100 backstroke, Janne Markkanen and  Valtteri Halonen kept the excitement going by tying in 57.79 seconds. Halonen led by .13 at the 50, but could not get the edge to claim victory.

The women’s 100 butterfly was won by Emilia Pikkarainen in 59.79 seconds. She was followed by Nea Norismaa (1:01.28) and Margaret Markvardt (1:02.63). For the men, the event was taken by Tuomas Pokkinen (54.48). Tony Eriksson was second in 55.42 and Tuomas Kiviluoma took third in 55.68.

Eveliina Pihkamäki dominated the women’s 400 freestyle right from the start. Her time of 4:28.14 bested Vaula Vekkeli by six seconds. The men’s race was done similarly, with Eetu Piiroinen crushing the field in 3:57.00. Miro Torola took second in 4:08.24.

Filipp Provorkov outlasted Lassi Ohtonen in the men’s 50 breaststroke. Their times were 28.26 and 28.84, respectively. The women’s race was won by Jenna Laukkanen, who got to the wall first in 31.13.

The meet concluded with the anticipated 50 freestyle. For the men, Ari-Pekka Liukkonen dominated the sprint winning in 22.07. His closest competitor was Tatu Waltari who finished in 22.79. Hanna-Maria Seppälä continued her success by taking the women’s 50 freestyle in 25.32. Tessa Nurminen was a distant second at 26.25.

The winning women’s 100 fly time is her pr and a Finnish national-record too. This girl’sbeen around the block a time or two, having set the 200 IM NR (2:14.23) @ this same meet six years go.

Laukkanen’s 22,07 50 free is just off his NR 21.93 from last year’s Euro Championships so perhaps he’ll lower it next month @ Kazan.
