FINA World Cup Money List: Katinka Hosszu Breaks $100K in Winnings

BERLIN, Germany, August 11. WITH four days in the books of the 2013 FINA World Cup, the defending champion Katinka Hosszu has nearly collected $75,000 in race winnings to lead all-comers.

Swimmers are racing for $1,500 (1st), $1,000 (2nd) and $500 (3rd) for podium placements, and also are earning up to $10,000 per world-record performance. Initially, a $50,000 world-record bonus pool was set up, but FINA elected to bypass the cap, and Hosszu took full advantage with six world-record performances thus far.

Katika Hosszu: $60K (200 IM x 2; 100 IM x 3; 400 IM)
Mireia Belmonte Garcia: $20K (400 free; 800 free)
Chad Le Clos: $10K (200 fly)
Ranomi Kromowidjojo: $10K (50 free)

Additionally, FINA has set up three clusters, where swimmers earn money based on their performances within specific clusters. The European leg dished out $200,000 extra in winnings with Hosszu and Le Clos collecting the top prizes.

Men
1. Chad Le Clos (RSA) — 128 points, $40,000
2. Vlad Morozov (RUS) — 87 points, $25,000
3. Daniel Gyurta (HUN) — 84 points, $15,000
4. Roland Schoeman (RSA) — 57 points, $8,000
5. Conor Dwyer (USA) — 51 points, $7,000
6. Kenneth To (AUS) — 48 points, $5,000

Women
1. Katinka Hosszu (HUN) — 282 points, $40,000
2. Mireia Belmonte Garcia (ESP) — 97 points, $25,000
3. Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) — 86 points, $15,000
4. Lauren Boyle (NZL) — 66 points, $8,000
5. Emily Seebohm (AUS) — 61.5 points, $7,000
6. Jeanette Ottesen Gray (DEN) — 57 points, $5,000 *

*Tied with Alia Atkinson (JAM) with 57 points, but tiebreaker is swimmer with the higher number of Ranking points in any of the cluster’s legs. Ottesen Gray’s 36 points from Eindhoven trumps Atkinson’s 30 points from Eindhoven as the top single leg point tally.

With a $60,000 world-record bonus buffer, Hosszu is well out front with $114,000 in winnings. Le Clos is second with $57,500, while Mireia Belmonte Garcia cashed in $49,500 from the European cluster. Vlad Morozov ($33,500) and Ranomi Kromowidjojo ($31,000) also broke $30,000 thanks to the additional cluster money.

So far, more than $500,000 has been awarded with a final total pushing $2 million by the time the World Cup circuit is complete in the fall.
