FINA World Championships Open With Synchro Prelims

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 17. THE FINA World Championships officially started in Melbourne with preliminary action in synchronized swimming. Russia topped both preliminary sessions.

Duet Technical
Russia owned the morning with 98.500 points as Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova recorded 49.333 points for execution and 49.167 points for overall impression.

Japan's duo of Saho Harada and Emiko Suzuki finished 1.333 points behind with 97.167 points. The score came from 48.667 execution points and 48.500 overall impression points.

Spain's team of Gemma Mengual Civil and Paola Tirados Sanchez placed third with 96.833 overall points comprised of 48.333 execution and 48.500 overall impression points.

Team Free Routine
Russia's team of Anastasia Davydova, Anastasia Ermakova, Maria Gromova, Natalia Ischenko, Elvira Khasyanova, Olga Kuzhela, Anna Nasekina, Elena Ovtchinnikova, Svetlana Romashina and Anna Shorina paced the field in the free routine prelims with 99.000 points. The Russian contingent posted matching 49.5s for technical merit and artistic impression.

Japan's squad of Ai Aoki, Saho Harada, Naoko Kawashima, Hiromi Kobayashi, Erika Komura, Takako Konishi, Ayako Matsumara, Emiko Suzuki, Erina Suzuki and Masako Tachibana finished 1.833 points behind Russia with a tally of 97.167 (48.500 technical merit and 48.667 artistic impression).

Spain's contingent of Alba Cabello Rodilla, Ona Carbonell Ballestero, Andrea Fuentes Fache, Tina Fuentes Fache, Thais Henriquez Torres, Gemma Mengual Civil, Gisela Moron Rovira, Irina Rodriguez Alvarez, Paola Tirados Sanchez and Cristina Violan Espinosa took third with 96.667 points (48.000 technical merit and 48.667 artistic impression).
